Slovenian socialists “strongly believe” Slovenia will recognize Catalonia’s independence
CATALAN NEWS AGENCY – Socialist’s secretary general Dejan Levanič says that “every true social democrat stands with Catalonia”
The secretary general of the Slovenian Socialists, Dejan Levanič, said that the “self-determination of nations represents the most basic democratic fundamental of the European Union” and pointed out that “every true social democrat therefore stands with Catalans” via his Twitter account. Levanič also endorsed a statement made by the party’s second-in-comand, Jan Škoberne, who highlighted that Catalans “don’t need to be afraid” because he “strongly believes” that Slovenia “will be among the first to recognize” the Catalan Republic. “People of Slovenia stand with Catalonia,” added Skoberne.
Answering people’s comments, Škoberne insisted on the fact that “Catalonia has the same right to self-determination” as Slovenia. “Terror from Spanish Government only confirms this thesis,” he stressed. Slovenian socialists have six MP’s in the Parliament and are in the governing coalition. The party is also a part of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament, which also includes Catalan Socialists.
Spain, “furious” at Belgian support for mediation
The Spanish government didn’t like the Belgian prime minister’s support for dialogue and mediation between Spain and Catalonia. According to Belgian media, the Spanish government contacted the Belgian ambassador in Madrid to warn him that Spain is “surprised” by Charles Michel’s statements on the Catalan situation. Recently, the prime minister of Belgium called for “international and European mediation” if dialogue between Catalan and Spanish government fails.
According to the Belgian newspaper ‘De Morgen’, the Spanish president, Mariano Rajoy, sent an email to warn the ambassador following Michel’s statements. “We don’t understand how a neighboring country can make statements that seriously endanger bilateral relations,” says the mail sent by the Spanish government.
